This series of lubricants was developed to extend the service life of wire rope, particularly in the very rugged applications and environments of the mining, construction, and marine industries. The key advantages of Castrol Molub- Alloy 909 Wire Rope Lubricants are:
  • Simplified, all season, automatic application by pump or spray
  • Improved penetration for corrosion and antiwear protection of inner strands
  • A tough outer film for effective wear protection of wire ropes, sheaves, fairleads, and drums
  • A pliable coating that resists chipping or peeling at very low ambient temperatures

Castrol Molub-Alloy 909 Wire Rope Lubricants are part of Castrol Performance Lubricants’ Eco-Solutions?product offering. Formulated to address environmental concerns, they are free of lead, chlorinated solvents, and barium. They contain less than 2 ppm of phenol.

Castrol Molub-Alloy 909 Wire Rope Lubricants are made from premium quality, high viscosity, petroleum base oils. Unlike conventional asphaltic rope dressing, 909 has high viscosity index, which means it tends not to harden in cold climates nor thin and run in hot climates.

Castrol Molub-Alloy 909 Wire Rope Lubricants are formulated with other natural and synthetic constituents for strong adhesion and film forming characteristics. A proprietary blend of Castrol Molub-Alloy solid lubricants gives outstanding protection from friction and wear.

Select volatile thinners and highly polar materials encourage fast wetting and penetration to bring wear protection even to the inner strands. Solid lubricants become part of the tough polymerized surface coating, minimizing wear and attrition to the coating as well as sheaves and drums over which the ropes are drawn.
Applications:
The following recommendations are based on both laboratory and field tests and reflect the pumpability and sprayability of each grade. Product selection must also consider the length and diameter of pumping lines and the output pressure at the pump.

Application Range: Castrol Molub-Alloy Wire Rope Lubricant
  • 909 Light: -7°C(20°F) - 21°C(70°F)
  • 909 Heavy: above 4.4°C(40°F)
  • See Notes: High Ambient Temps

As a general rule, the heaviest grade that will effectively penetrate the wire rope is preferred, as it tends to extend the interval before relubrication. Accessibility to the rope and individual characteristics of dispensing equipment influence the rate of delivery and often dictate which grade to use.

In the mining industry, 909 Light is commonly used on hoist ropes and 909 Heavy on drag ropes. The best penetration occurs as wire ropes are being "fished out" or "payed out" under minimum load as high load tightens the wire. Drying and curing is even more effective if ropes remain extended for one to three minutes.

Castrol Molub-Alloy 909 Wire Rope Lubricants may be applied manually. However, application by automatic spray equipment is recommended. For best coverage and penetration, wire rope should be sprayed on all sides which requires a minimum of two nozzles opposing each other.
